What is a Dosha?

In Ayurveda — the 5,000-year-old Indian system of natural medicine — health is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Every person is born with a unique energetic constitution, called a prakriti, made up of varying combinations of three fundamental forces called doshas.

Understanding your dominant dosha is the first step toward truly personalised wellness — and it can transform everything from the foods you eat and the exercise you choose, to the spa treatments that will nourish you most deeply.

The Three Doshas

Vata — Air & Space

Vata governs movement, breath, circulation, and the nervous system. Vata-dominant individuals tend to be creative, quick-thinking, enthusiastic and flexible — but when out of balance, they may experience anxiety, insomnia, dry skin and scattered thoughts.

Best treatments for Vata: warm, grounding Abhyanga with heavy sesame oils; Shirodhara for nervous system calming; gentle head and neck massage.

Pitta — Fire & Water

Pitta governs transformation, digestion, metabolism and intelligence. Pitta-dominant people are often driven, sharp, organised and articulate — but when imbalanced, they may experience inflammation, skin irritation and a sharp temper.

Best treatments for Pitta: cooling facials; gentle oil massage with coconut or sunflower oils; herbal steam with cooling herbs like mint and sandalwood.

Kapha — Earth & Water

Kapha governs structure, stability, immunity and nourishment. Kapha-dominant people are often calm, loyal, nurturing and strong — but when imbalanced, they may experience sluggishness, congestion and emotional attachment.

Best treatments for Kapha: invigorating massage with warming oils; Trekkers Recovery Massage; dry brushing; energising body treatments.

Most People are a Combination

Very few people are a single pure dosha. Most are a combination of two — called a dvandva prakriti — with one typically dominant. The most common combinations in modern urban life are Vata-Pitta (the driven, anxious achiever) and Kapha-Vata (the calm but creatively restless type).
