The Crown Jewel of Ayurveda
Of all the treatments in the Ayurvedic tradition, Shirodhara is perhaps the most profound. Its name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow) — and it is exactly that: a continuous, gentle stream of warm herbal oil flowing over the forehead, across the third eye point, and into the hairline.
The effect is unlike anything else. Within minutes, the constant, rhythmic flow creates a state of deep mental stillness — a meditative peace that most people have never experienced outside of years of meditation practice.
The Third Eye Connection
In Ayurvedic and yogic traditions, the forehead — specifically the space between the eyebrows — is considered the seat of the ajna chakra, or third eye. This energy centre is associated with intuition, clarity, sleep regulation, and the balance of the nervous system.
Shirodhara works directly on this point. The continuous oil flow is thought to stimulate the hypothalamus, regulate circadian rhythms, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's rest and digest mode.
What Happens During the Treatment
You lie comfortably on a warm treatment table, your eyes gently covered with an herbal eye pillow. A special copper vessel suspended above your head releases a thin, continuous stream of warm herbal oil that flows slowly and steadily across your forehead.
The oil used is carefully selected for your dosha and current condition — typically a medicated sesame oil infused with herbs known for their nervine and cooling properties. The session includes a full body massage before the dhara phase, allowing the body to fully relax.
Who Benefits Most?
- Chronic stress and anxiety — the rhythmic flow interrupts the stress response loop.
- Insomnia and poor sleep quality — many guests report transformative sleep improvement after just one session.
- Mental fatigue and burnout — clarity often returns within hours of the treatment.
- Headaches and migraines — the cooling oils and nervous system regulation provide lasting relief.
- Jet lag and time zone disruption — the circadian reset effect is remarkable for frequent travellers.
A Note on Experience
Guests often describe Shirodhara as entering a waking dream state — aware, but profoundly still. Many simply drift into a state of complete peace that they carry with them for days afterwards. Shirodhara is available as a standalone 90-minute session (€129) or as part of our Urban Reset package.
